Today was the first gathering of the Advent Retreat in Daily Living I am offering at UST Law School this year. The theme of this year’s retreat is Voices of Advent.
After we took time for the participants to introduce themselves and share a little about what Advent means to them, I began my reflection by talking about the significance of the entry of Christ into the world for Christians and about the importance of Advent.
Advent is a time of waiting – a long time of waiting. And people react differently to long waiting periods. Some wait patiently. Some give up and grow despondent. Some settle into a comfortable way of doing things. Many decide they can do without any change.
Two of those reactions are exemplified by Zacharias and Herod, the voices, respectively, of disbelief and of fear. I spoke about both in my talk.
