Today we in the United States celebrate Independence Day. Many of us will gather with friends or family for a meal and many will find their way to good viewing spots for evening fireworks.
It is a day on which we tend to think of ourselves in our identity as citizens of the United States. There is nothing wrong with that, so long as we who are Christians don’t forget our fundamental identity, which has nothing to do with what country we hail from.
In the words of the first President of the United States, George Washington
While we are zealously performing the duties of good citizens and soldiers, we certainly ought not to be inattentive to the higher duties of religion. To the distinguished character of Patriot, it should be our highest glory to add the more distinguished character of Christian.
Happy 4th of July. Enjoy the day, but remember who you are.
