Someone posted a quote on Facebook the other day that said, “Holding a grudge is letting someone live rent-free in your head.”
A simple statement, but one that conveys a real truth. If you’ve ever held a grudge against someone, you know exactly what the quote means. The object of your grudge is walking around just fine – and may not even be aware of what is going on inside of you – and your peace is completely shattered.
The statement reminds that what we let live rent-free in our head has an enormous impact on us.
When I read it, one of the things that came to my mind is what I have seen in several places referred to as an old Cherokee legend. (Whether it really is or whether someone else made it up, I don’t know, but it is a good story either way.)
The story goes that an old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life. He tells the boy that a fight is going on in his head between two wolves. One of the wolves is evil – he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego. The other is good – he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith.
The boy asks his grandfather the obvious question: Which wolf is stronger…which wins?
The answer is simple: “The one I feed.”
Which wolf will you feed today?
Your words this day brought to mind a time in my life when I was quite resentful. I’m sharing what a friend of mine wrote to me that caused me to seek the help I needed to grow…… “resentment is like drinking poison and hoping the other person dies.” Your words each day are a gift and I thank you for sharing.
