In todays’ Gospel from St. Mark, Jesus is asked which is the first of all the commandments. We have heard Jesus’ response enough times to know it by heart: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.” Jesus then continues, conveying the second commandment: “Your shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
Love God, love one another. Sometimes love seems like a difficult task, something we need to try hard to do.
I think perhaps complying with the commandment to love is easier if we keep in mind the truth articulated by St. John of the Cross, that “Love is the soul’s inclination, strength, and power in making its way to God, for love unites it with God.”
Love is the natural state of our soul. It is our natural inclination. All we need to do is let our soul do what it was meant to do.
