Advent Retreat in Daily Living (Part 4)

This is the final week of the Advent Retreat in Daily Living I’m giving at the University of St. Thomas School of Law. During the first week, our prayer focused on the prophets of Advent and the prophets in our lives. In week two, the retreat prayer focuses on the long Advent prior to the birth of Jesus. Last week we focused on preparing ourselves for Christ’s coming. At today’s session, in order to help us think about what gift we will offer the Christ child as we kneel at the creche on Christmas morning, I told Henry VanDyke’s story, The Story of the Other Wise Man, summarizing some parts of the story and reading others. It is a gem of a story. I have loved it since I first read it, 40 years ago. (I was given a copy of the book in 1968 by the leaders of the Junior Great Book Programs I was participating in at the time.)

You can find the talk here . The prayer material for this fourth week of the retreat, which I give some explanation of during the latter part of the talk, can be found here.
