As I look back on some of my posts over the last week or so (I’m thinking particularly of Pay it Forward and Minor Prophets and Genuine Revelations), I realize that the conviction had really taken root in my soul that every step, regardless of how small it appears to be, matters.
We are enamored of the flashy and we long to do things that have REALLY BIG impacts. We want to save the world in one fell swoop. Sometimes I fear that we refrain from taking steps that could help, but that somehow don’t seem big enough to us. We think, they can’t possibly matter to the big picture. When such thoughts arise, we would do well to remember something RJK said in a speech he gave at the University of Cape Town in June of 1966 (which my friend Conor fortuitously just sent me the link to):
It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.
So start sending out those tiny ripples of hope!
