God’s Promise

All this week, the first reading for Mass has been from the Book of Ezekiel. Day after day we have heard the same message. The people of Israel have sinned. They have strayed from the path of God. They have profaned the name of God.

And yet, God keeps coming. Over and over again, God says the same thing in different ways. “I will put my spirit within you.” “I will sprinkle clean water upon you to cleanse you.” “I will claim my sheep.” “I will open your graves and have you rise from them.” “I will put my spirit in you that you may live.”

God is relentless. God keeps coming. No matter what we do, God keeps trying to bring us back. How can we possible respond appropriately to such incredible love?

Profound gratitude seems a good place to start. As the psalm response for today proclaims, “Give thanks to the Lord; his love is everlasting.”
