Make for Yourselves a New Heart

Today’s first Mass reading is from Ezekiel and contains God’s invitation to “turn away and be converted from all your crimes.” God implores his people to “make for yourselves a new heart and a new spirit. Return and live!”

If we are people of prayer, our “crimes” are not the sort of thing that end up in courts. They are much more subtle ways in which we turn from God, in which we fail to allow ourselves to open ourselves completely to God.

It is worth considering: what does God’s invitation in Ezechial mean for me? What do I need to turn away from to open myself more fully to God’s love? From what “crimes” do I need to be converted? What would a new heart and a new spirit look like for me? Might make a good reflection for today.
