Susan:

Great stuff! Good questions.

in an earlier seminar called Making Disciples, Equipping Apostles, we worked out a simple little "map" of the tasks of adult formation according to the needs of basic spiritual development:

1) Seekers (those in pre-discipleship stages of spiritual development) - the majority of Catholic - in our experience - practicing or not, fall into this camp.

The formation tasks:

Evangelization (which includes pre-evangelization, initial proclamation of the basic gospel, and initiatory catechesis)

2) Disciples: Formation in

Spiritual life: prayer, worship, liturgy, etc.

Christian worldview (which would include Church's social teaching, geared for those called to secular vocations)

Christian community (formation in relationships)

3) Apostles: (those who have begun to take responsibility or their part of the Church's mission) Formation in

Discernment (charisms, vocation, application of Gospel in real life situations)

Taking It to the Marketplace (living your faith and vocation effectively as an evangelizer and agent of change in secular settings with the support of the Christian community)

Wonderful contemplative prayer...
These days I'll pray it in either Spanish or Irish Gaelic... keeps me focused and mindful of the prayer. The nuns taught me years ago on what a subversive act praying the Rosary can be. I pray it at Peace and death penalty vigils .

There is a big difference. The positive wording includes the negative, but there's more. It's not enough not to offend/harm another, we're to edify/encourage/love them through actions. Hard stuff!

I suspect that the spirituality/religion distinction has been overdrawn, particularly in the modern context where the two blur. I have just posted on it. In case you are interested, here is the link. http://deligentia.wordpress.com/2009/10/30/spirituality-and-religion-a-false-dichotomy/

What does it mean to say God is love in a metaphysical sense? I suspect the answer is more difficult than it might seem.
You might be interested in the following post:(http://deligentia.wordpress.com/2009/10/24/deciphering-god-is-love/).

I traveled a similar route... Catholicism was an accident at birth... dabbled in Seminary school, left the Church, then regained the wonder and mystery of the "Body of Christ". I went the UU route, wonderful welcoming congregation, steeped in works of Peace and Social Justice... Catholic Church kept calling me home. I still thrash about in discomfort being part of our crazy, wounded, dysfunctional family. I look to the likes of the Berrigans, Dorothy Day, Sr Joan Chittister, Fr John Dear SJ, Thomas Merton, and the litany of Saints for guidance and perspective.
My return was 'sealed' during a trip to Ireland and a visit to ancient spritual and religious sites where I 'heard' the Ancient Echoes of the past, the prayers of my forebearers, the poetry of the land.
Thanks Susan for this timely post, and articulating a journey and asking the question that many of us share.
