Great reflection on St. Stephen's feast day -- thanks for posting. I've got a link to this over at my own blog.

I always thought that there was a strong parallelism between Christmas and St. Stephen's feast day. Just as Christmas celebrates the birth of Christ, of God entering our world visibly, so too St. Stephen's Day celebrates the first Christian to enter into heaven via martyrdom. As such, the two feasts go together.

Cheers!

I am a good friend of Mike & Maria Scaperlanda.I've known them since the early 1980s as newly weds and first time parents.I enjoyed your reflection on finding home.I used to think home was where my beloved spouse was. When he went to heaven four years ago I found myself searching for him in different places, experiences, and meaning. Now I am learning that home is wherever I am and my knowledge of God's presence in my life.I am home on the road to my students, friends, family, and parish.I am home in the quiet, the noise, the small & large tasks of my day. Most of all I am home surrounded by the wisdom that I am not alone, God and His Holy Mother are always with me...calling me, carrying me, reminding me that I am in this world but not of it...I am of greater blessings, callings, and meaning. Thanks be to God for the awareness of His ever-present existence in my life...past, present, & future.Your new friend, God willing, marianne miles leal, Frisco, TX

I call myself a "Zen Christian" and fashion my beliefs from a little bit of this, a little bit of that.

Buddhist dharma has helped my spiritual growth. I have not turned my back completely on Catholicism. But, since I am divorced and married a second time through a church of another denomination of Christianity, I can no longer take part in Holy Communiion.

I can take part in communion with a community of "sitters," and that is what is making all the difference with my "communion" with God.

thanks for your insight.

Will check you out for updates and past posts.

Hagar IS a bit player in the story. She is almost totally unremarkable. To fail to understand that is to miss the point: God cares enough to watch even the least significant of us.

She does not "name" God as if she has any right to do so. She simply recognizes Him for who He has shown himself to be; "the God who sees". She does not know His name, so she refers to Him by a description of His character as He has revealed it to her. She is the only one who ever uses these words to describe Him. It isn't especially creative and it is not a reflection of her eagerness to know God but rather His eagerness to reveal Himself to her. She did not cry out to God, He came to her.

Too often I see people projecting their own thoughts, feelings and circumstances onto scripture, often missing what God is really trying to tell us. How can Hagar be described as "breaking from convention" when we don't know what the conventions of her day were? This isn't a story of Hagar doing great things. It is a story of God doing great things for Hagar, not because she was special in any way but simply because she obeyed Him and returned to Sarai.
